Run

Last Viewed 2013

Description/Opinion:

Run, like the movie Magnolia, has four interlinking plots following several characters. It revolves largely around the experience of living very poor in London.

Pros: Olivia Colman, Olivia Colman, Olivia Colman. Diverse characters and casting. Genuine attempts to represent class, race and poverty.
Cons: while it creates a really gritty, realistic world, the show really does lean on the stresses and difficulties of being poor and working class in London. The white guys are violent, the asian girl is being taken advantage of, the black guy is trying to get clean. It’s not 100% my call to make, but it did feel a little stereotyped
Genre: drama

Approach carefully if: you have difficulty with random acts of violence leading to death (white on white), domestic violence and the characterised normalisation of domestic violence (you hear it off screen and the main character doesn’t blink), sexual coercion / extortion of a woman for sex, people trafficking (from memory)

Can be found: Netflix

If you liked, I recommend: Top Boy, Redfern Now, Undercover
